One of the worst things to experience as a dog owner is dealing with diarrhea. Not only is it unpleasant for your dog, the aftermath can be very difficult to clean from carpets and rugs. How to Prevent your Dog from getting Diarrhea.
Usually diarrhea is cause by something your dog digested. Sniffing and tasting is part of their nature. Dogs are very curious creatures and will pretty much eat anything if it tastes remotely like food, even if its not.
- Keep a close eye when you’re outside with your dog. Teach them the “drop it” command, so if you see them pick something up with their mouth you can command them to release it. Untrained dogs may swallow something quickly instead of releasing it, especially if you run at it screaming to “drop it!” Train your dog early.
- In your home, keep shoes, children’s toys, chemicals, and other things that may be harmful out of reach.
- Avoid using harmful chemicals on your lawn and houseplants. If your dog is an outdoor dog, keep your yard free of rotting leaves, wild mushrooms, and other things that can raise your dog’s curiosity. If your dog has a habit of eating grass, it could mean your dog’s diet needs more fiber.
- Keep your garbage, inside and outside, secured. If your dog learns to get into garbage cans, then it could mean disaster. Make sure the garbage is impossible to reach by using closed trash receptacles.
- When it comes to playing with your dog, use chew toys instead of wooden sticks. Don’t let your dog chew on sticks and other things that likely won’t be good for their digestion.
These simple steps should prevent your dog from digesting something that can cause diarrhea. If you find diarrhea on your carpet or rugs, you can use dog stain removal products to restore your home. If your dog stays stick for a long period of time, or his condition quickly gets worse, then consult your veterinarian.
