When dealing with cat and kitten urine the most important thing to know is that you have to get to and clean the accident as quickly as possible. If you let a pee stain sit, the natural bacteria within the urine will begin to eat away at your carpet and upholstery. As the bacteria feeds, it will release gases that cause the familiar strong ammonia smell. Whether you use a pre-made product or clean it the old-fashioned way, getting to the problem early will make all of the difference.

The Effective Way

The easiest and most effective way to clean-up cat and kitten urine messes is to use a pre-made product designed specifically for these kinds of problems. We highly recommend Urine Gone, which comes with a free stain-spotting black light, and a free lint remover. It is an all-in-one-kit for cleaning up the cat and kitten accidents no one wants to clean!

The Not-So-Effective Way

First – Use a thick bath towel to blot up as much liquid as you can. Use paper towels after until you can no longer see any moisture.

Second – Spray the area with clean water or a mild solution of vinegar and water. Once again, blot up the area with a bath towel or paper towels until the area is clean.

As you can see, this method takes a lot of work and a lot of paper towels. If you the stain still remains, then it definitely time to move on to higher strength products, like Urine Gone.

What about Old Stains?

When it comes to old urine stains, the bacterial digestion process has been well under way. By this time, it’s definitely wise to use Urine Gone to get rid of these stains. What if the stain has gone all the way down to the floorboard? No worries, Urine Gone works all the way down to the floor board to remove any kind of cat or kitten stain!

What happens if you can’t find the stain, but the smell remains strong in your house? It may be time to invest in a black light. A black light will let you find all sorts of biological stains, so it is a wise investment if you’re having trouble locating the source of cat urine odor in your home. If you don’t know where to get a black light or feel they’re too expensive, this Urine Gone kit includes a free black light!

Why Urine Gone?

Urine Gone is incredibly easy to use, and it takes a lot less work than traditional cleaning methods. Simply spray liberal amounts of Urine Gone onto the affected area so it can soak up the stain. Let Urine Gone sit, and then remove any residue after it has dried completely. There you have it. No more need to worry about unsightly cat and kitten pee stains and smells!

Buy Urine Gone Today for only $19.99 plus shipping! Free Black light and Free Lint Roller included!

Cat litter is used in your cat’s litter box to absorb urine and the moisture from fecal matter. Cat litter is made from various materials ranging from clay minerals all the way to bio-degradable products. It is designed to eliminate odors, and it is attractive to cats because of their cleanly nature. Early cat litter boxes used to be filled with sand, but it proved to be poor at trapping odor. These days, the materials are far more absorbent, able to absorb their weight in water. Unless your cat is an outdoor cat, you’ll need a litter box and kitty litter to avoid pet stain and odor problems in your house.

Conventional clay based cat litter – This traditional litter is the more common type of litter. The clay minerals are absorbent and reduce cat urine and fecal odors. The downside is that it has to be cleaned pretty frequently, at least once a week.

One of the first cat litters available commercially was Kitty Litter, in 1948. Sand was previously used before clay based litter. The larger molecules in clay meant that less material would be tracked from the litter box.

Clumping / Scooping cat litter – Most of these litters are made from granulated bentonite clay, which clumps together well when wet. It forms a solid mass outside of the other litter and tends to collect into a ball shape. The solid clumped material can be removed from the litter box, which lessens the frequency of changing the cat litter. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if the litter is clean or dirty, so it is best to plan your litter box cleanings regularly. Every four to six weeks is recommended, and the litter box itself should be disinfected.

Avoid using clumping litter with kittens, as they may swallow the litter. It can swell up and solidify inside of their digestive tracks. Avoid flushing clumping litter in the toilet because it has a tendency to adhere to plumbing, which can lead to clogging.

Silica Gel Litter - This litter is a porous, granular form of sodium silicate. It has great moisture and odor control, and the highest absorbency of any litter. It can take 20-30 lbs of clay or clumping litter to do the job of 4-6 lbs of silica gel litter. Traditional and clumping litter needs to be replenished, while silica litter can be stirred after removing the clumps. The downside to silica gel litter is that it gives no warning sign to when it needs to be cleaned. If not cleaned for a long period of time, urine can pool at the bottom of the litter box.

Biodegradable litter – This litter is made from pellets of biodegradable materials, such as renewable plant resources, recycled newspaper, wood pellets, saw dust, and other post-use fruits and vegetables. Biodegradable litter is flushable (although flushing is not recommended), unlike clumping litter, and has the best deodorizing properties.

Traditional cat litter does make its mark on our planet. Over 2 million tons of cat litter are dumped into landfills in the US each year. Conventional cat litter is not biodegradable or renewable. Biodegradable cat litter reduces waste burden because it eventually decomposes. Additionally, biodegradable cat litter can be disposed of at home if one has a compost pile.

The only downside to biodegradable litter is the higher cost. If more people began to use this kind of litter and rejected non-biodegradable litters, eventually the price would fall to other types of litter.

Handle cat litter with care

Cat feces can host a parasite known as toxoplasma gondii. This parasite can survive sewage treatment processes, and can make its way back to the ocean where it can cause deadly infections for marine mammals such as sea otters, whales, and porpoises.

Pregnant women and people with weak immune systems should not handle cat litter. Always wash your hands after handling cat litter.

If you acquired your new kitten from a breeder or pet store, they should already be trained on how to use the litter box. Mothers teach their kittens how to use a little box, and breeders are able to replicate that training.

If your new kitten has come from where they have not been trained to use a litter box, such as an outside environment, then you will have to teach your kitten how to use one if you do not want a lifetime of urination throughout your house. If you have cat pee problems, try cat urine removal products

Choosing the right litter tray and kitty litter

While there are many kitty litter trays available, you don’t need to get too sophisticated. When your kitten is young, avoid any kind of automatic litter box as it may scare your kitten from using the litter box. Choose a litter tray that has a lot of space for your cat to roam around in. Make sure its walls are low enough for your kitten to be able to walk into inside.

Kitty litter can take some experimentation. Try different kinds if you see your kitten does not like a certain type. Avoid any scented litters because most cats actually don’t like the smell. Do not buy cat litter that clumps into clay. If your kitten swallows it, they can be in a lot of trouble as it may cause intestinal blockage.

Teaching your kitten to use the litter box

When you begin potty training your kitten, you have to keep a close eye on them. You will want to keep your doors around the house closed so they have less room for roaming around. In addition, block off any areas where the kitten can get out of sight.

The natural instinct for cats is to bury their urine and poop. If your kitten begins scratching the floor, it’s a sign that they are about to go. Gently pick your kitten up and move them to the litter box. Once inside, demonstrate the surface of the litter by scratching it with your finger. The kitten should understand that they can dig too, and they should be able to pick it up from there.

Other signs of being ready to go include crouching in a corner, or in a hidden place. If you’re playing with your kitten and it suddenly takes off, it could be a sign that they’re ready to go.

If it takes a few tries, never raise your voice with the kitten. You do not want to associate anything bad with the litter box. If your kitten has peed or pooped outside of the litter box, bring it into the litter box. By bringing the scent to the litter box, they should associate it with going over time.

Developing a routine with your kitten

A kitten’s natural tendency is to pee or poop after eating. When they finish eating, bring the kitten to the litter box and scratch it with your finger. Do the same after they are done with a long nap.

Where to put the litter box

Cats like their privacy! Put the litter box in a low traffic area of the house. Corners are preferable. You may need additional litter boxes if you have more than one kitten, or if your house is very large and you are letting your kitten roam free.

Litter box maintenance

Keep your litter box clean! Cats, in general, are very tidy. They may avoid using a litter box if it gets too dirty and soiled. Change the litter daily, and remove the hard bits every chance you get. Wash the litter box at least once a week.

Is your cat peeing outside of the litter box and ruining your carpet and floors? Is your new kitten making a mess of your house? Do you need cat urine removal products? There are many various reasons why a cat may not use a litter box. Read below to see if they apply to your cat or kitten.

Medical Conditions

If your cat has been trained to use the litter box, but all of the sudden begins to pee on your carpet and rugs, then it is likely a medical condition. The most common medical condition that can cause cats to urinate outside of the litter box is a urinary tract infection. If you think that is the case, take your cat to the vet for a check-up.

If you cat is frequenting the litter box often, even if they manage to make it without peeing on your floor, then you should consider a urinary tract infection regardless. See your vet as soon as possible.

Diabetes is another medical condition that can cause cats to urinate more frequently.

Dirty litter box

Cats are clean creatures by nature. They like to urinate in clean areas, and will bury their waste. If your litter box is dirty then your cat or kitten will avoid using it. Scoop out soiled litter often, and clean your litter box thoroughly every four to six weeks.

Cat or Kitten does not like your type of Litter

Cats are very picky. If you switch up your litter type and your cat stops using the litter box, then it’s a good sign they don’t like it, often because of the smell. Avoid scented kitty litter. If you want to switch to another brand of litter, say for environmental reasons, then start off by mixing them and gradually adding more and more of the other type of litter.

Your cat’s litter box is in a bad location

Cats like low profile areas when it comes to their litter box. Do not put the litter box in a busy location like a hallway near the kitchen. Try placing it in a corner in an low-traffic room so your cat can haves its privacy. Make sure your cat has free access to the litter box, so nothing in a room where the door will be closed. Keep your cats food and water away from their litter box.

Your kitten forgot where the litter box is

New kittens may have trouble remembering where the litter box is if you move it. You will have to educate them on the new location. Avoid moving the litter box with a new kitten if you do not have to move it.

Your Cat does not like to share

If you have more than one cat, there is a possibility that they will not want to share the litter box. Have one litter box in your home for each cat. Cats are territorial so they instinctively want their own space.

Having multiple cats may pose its own problems. When a cat marks its territory with urine, another cat can come along and reclaim it with their own urine. It’s a perpetual cycle that can never end, and their may be not remedy for it except reducing the number of cats you have in the house.

You will need Pet Stain Removal Products if you find your cat or kitten going outside of the litter box. Follow the steps above to prevent it!

One of the worst things to experience as a dog owner is dealing with diarrhea. Not only is it unpleasant for your dog, the aftermath can be very difficult to clean from carpets and rugs. Diarrhea with dogs should only last about a day because it’s usually caused by something they ate. If it persists past that time, you should see a veterinarian. Always consult your veterinarian if you are unsure about anything when your dog becomes ill. If your dog has defecated on your carpet or rugs, you’ll probably need pet stain cleaning products.

How to Prevent your Dog from getting Diarrhea.

Usually diarrhea is cause by something your dog digested. Sniffing and tasting is part of their nature. Dogs are very curious creatures and will pretty much eat anything if it tastes remotely like food, even if its not.

Keep a close eye when you’re outside with your dog. Teach them the “drop it” command, so if you see them pick something up with their mouth you can command them to release it. Untrained dogs may swallow something quickly instead of releasing it, especially if you run at it screaming to “drop it!” Train your dog early.

In your home, keep shoes, children’s toys, chemicals, and other things that may be harmful out of reach.

Avoid using harmful chemicals on your lawn and houseplants. If your dog is an outdoor dog, keep your yard free of rotting leaves, wild mushrooms, and other things that can raise your dog’s curiosity. If your dog has a habit of eating grass, it could mean your dog’s diet needs more fiber.

Keep your garbage, inside and outside, secured. If your dog learns to get into garbage cans, then it could mean disaster. Make sure the garbage is impossible to reach by using closed trash receptacles.

When it comes to playing with your dog, use chew toys instead of wooden sticks. Don’t let your dog chew on sticks and other things that likely won’t be good for their digestion.

These simple steps should prevent your dog from digesting something that can cause diarrhea. If you find diarrhea on your carpet or rugs, you can use dog stain removal products to restore your home. If your dog stays stick for a long period of time, or his condition quickly gets worse, then consult your veterinarian.
